It is no surprise that a woman’s body shape will be different after a breast augmentation procedure. It also comes as no surprise that finding the right clothing to fit your enhanced contours can be complex. The first step to getting started on your new wardrobe is always to consult your surgeon about what types of bras and clothing you will need during the healing process. Once the healing process is complete, you will be ready to hit the town and shop new styles, which won’t be hard considering all the great stores here in the St. Louis area.
In the meantime, I’ve provided 5 helpful tips for shopping after a breast augmentation to get you through the healing process.
1. Be patient: Highly supportive, full coverage bras must be worn for the first month after augmentation. Although these bras may not be considered the most fun or the sexiest bras available, they give your breasts the support needed to heal. Breast implants can take 3 to 6 months after augmentation to settle, so be patient before you purchase bras with underwire, lace, and other features that may cause irritation.
2. Be prepared: During your post-op you should have 1 or 2 supportive and comfortable bras to wear that have been approved by your surgeon. You should also have clothing that is soft and loose-fitting, as swelling and some soreness will occur. This type of clothing will make the healing process much more comfortable.
3. Have a professional bra fitting: Approximately 3 months after the augmentation, I encourage my patients to have a professional bra fitting. At this point, breast size and placement is generally established, so patients can begin to shop for the bras they have been longing to wear. If you are not sure where to be fitted, I recommend visiting Victoria’s Secret, where they offer free fittings to all shoppers and numerous styles, both supportive and flattering, to help embrace your new shape.
4. Don’t worry about cup size: I often remind my patients that breast implants are not measured in cup sizes like 34C or 36D, but rather in volume such as cubic centimeters. Therefore, be open to the changes in your body during your professional bra fitting and don’t focus on cup size. Bra sizes can also vary by brand and style, so discussing these different options at your fitting is important.
5. Ask your surgeon: Throughout the healing process make sure to always consult your surgeon to ensure that your breasts and incisions have healed enough to wear the clothing you purchase.
