Procedure Overview

A laser skin treatment from St. Louis Cosmetic Surgery can renew your skin and address a variety of imperfections, such as blotchiness, rough patches, wrinkles, acne scars, and even skin cancer. The lasers emit light beams that heat the skin, causing damaged skin cells to vaporize and stimulating collagen and elastin in the deeper dermal layers. This treatment is most often performed on the face, but the Erbium laser can also be used on other areas of the body such as the hands, neck or chest. Many people who also want to regain their skin firmness can benefit from the non-surgical skin tightening procedure Thermage™.

Your Surgery

Before your laser skin resurfacing treatment from St. Louis Cosmetic Surgery, your skin will be prepped using appropriate skin care products and treatments such as a glycolic peel. This provides a better result and faster recovery after your procedure.

Both the CO2 laser and Erbium laser can be comfortably performed under local anesthesia with light sedation at our luxurious medical spa. During treatment, short pulses of energy are administered in a precise pattern in order to selectively heat the skin. Specific areas of concern (such as the eyes or mouth) can be treated individually, or the procedure can be performed over the entire face. Laser skin resurfacing can take between 30 to 45 minutes for partial treatment, or 1 to 2 hours for a full session.

Your Recovery

After treatment, a dressing may be applied to the affected area in order to protect the skin and facilitate healing. Typically, some temporary swelling, redness, or itchiness may occur for the first few days. These side effects are usually brief and most of our patients experience very little discomfort.

After 5 to 7 days, the skin will become dry and peel – revealing the healthy skin below. Individuals are asked to avoid sunlight for several weeks in order to prevent burning. A sunscreen should be worn in order to provide additional protection from environmental damage.

Your Results

After the skin has completely healed, most people enjoy a younger-looking appearance with fewer lines, age-spots, and blemishes. The skin is visibly improved with enhanced radiance and is smoother and softer to the touch. The increased collagen growth also provides a more supple appearance.
